This neighbourhood was developed as a working-class area in the 1612 and it soon became the most densely populated district of Amsterdam in the beginning of the 20th century. Everyday life was happening on the pavement and inside the pubs.

As a result of the 'very cosy' living conditions, the Jordan area developed into a district with it's own culture and tradition, which later translated itself into Jordaan folk music.

The Jordaan became famous both in- and outside the Netherlands in the fifties because of the hits famous people like Johnny Jordaan and Tante (Aunt) Leen performed over the radio and inside pubs. Your guide will sing a number of pure Jordaan hits in the pub. This will certainly reveal some of the spirit of romance and the cosy life attributed to the Jordaan.
