Hidden Treasures Tour in Amsterdam
In the Hidden Treasures Tour in Amsterdam Mokum Events' guide will take you to the oldest and most hidden parts of Amsterdam.
You will have no clue about what you will be seeing, simply because you don't know what is really hidden in old Amsterdam.
Lunch
We will start with a big lunch in a cosy restaurant right there in the old city centre.
After lunch, we will walk along little alleys, canals and ancient buildings which you wouldn't have noticed if it were not for your professional guide's extensive knowledge. He will tell you everything about the old city gates and strange sculptures.
Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder
One of the most interesting objects to visit is the hidden church of 'Ons Lieve Heer op Solder' (Our Lord in the Attic). You will also visit the interior. From the outside it looks like an 'ordinary' building along the canal, but once inside, one discovers that, apart from being a house, it is a complete 17th century church that is hidden behind the facade!
Don't worry; we won't forget to visit the Wallen (Red Light District). The ladies are hiding all sorts of things behind their windows. Your guide will tell you more about the people of this particular district and about some of the famous visitors! This hidden church 'in the attic' was built during the Reformation, when Catholics were forbidden to hold public services.
The Oude Kerk (Old Church)
We will also see the Oude Kerk (Old Church), the city's oldest building. This church dates back to 1250 and is consecrated to Holy St. Nicholas, bishop of Myra. This church has beautiful 16th century stained glass windows and various tombs of former Dutch sea heroes. Rembrandt married his first wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh, right here in this church. Saskia's grave is amongst the 2500 gravestones on the floor.
Naturally, there will also be some time to relax halfway through the tour. We will take you to an old-fashioned baker's shop in the middle of the Wallen, where a hot cup of coffee with a fresh baked cake is served.
