Courtyards in the Jordan area Amsterdam
Mokum Events will take you to the popular Jordaan where you will discover the old but wonderful hidden courtyards of Amsterdam. We will take you to Sint-Andrieshof, the Claes Claeszhofje, the Karthuizerhofje and the Raepenhofje.
Experience the atmosphere of ages gone by, see how poor people used to be housed and feel the surrounding peace and this in the middle of the city!
Fifty-one (yes 51) courtyards have been build from the 17th Century onwards to this day in Amsterdam. They are usually found tucked away, behind existing buildings. They are often either "L" or "U" shaped. Space being always at a premium (especially in Amsterdam), they sometimes have the shape of a narrow street. Amsterdam is vigilant about her history and has managed to safeguard 47 of these courtyards!
Courtyards were originally built as free (!) accommodation for poor old people. Let us call them a type of communal building" avant la lettre". Forget about it today: free accommodation in such beautiful locations!
