Architecture Barge Amsterdam
You know that a city is best seen from the water's edge. This certainly applies to Amsterdam with its harbours, the IJ and obviously to the world-renowned canals. That is one of the reasons why we have devised a great number of sailing arrangements for you.
This architectural boat cruise is a fabulous experience. We will take you to a number of characteristic and imposing examples of recent architecture in the Eastern harbour area.
After you have come on board our Architecture Barge and enjoyed a cup of coffee with sweets, we will sail along important architectural landmarks, some veru special modern designs, often very old (mostly industrial) buildings. They have been restored and rebuild in a lovely way. You will see the passenger terminal of cruise ships, rebuild warehouses and the old Lloyd-hotel, which at one time housed thousands of immigrants from Eastern Europe and was even also used, for a good ten years, as a jail.
We will show you on Java Island how modern architecture can be mixed with a historical setting; the buildings reminds one of the seventeenth century canal belt of Amsterdam. You will see how the Jan Schaefer bridge runs right through the huge de Zwijger warehouse, this old cold storage house had to be preserved.
On the KNSM Island you will see imposing new builds with surprising architectural styling. Unlike Java Island, a number of original industrial buildings on KNSM have been kept and restored. Weather and time permitting, we will step ashore for a short stroll. Finally, we will sail back via the nieuwe vaart that was constructed in the seventeenth century to the old centre of Mokum and berth and thus end our tour.
